Three weeks, a rooftop tent and one reason to point the car towards Britain: our friends were touring festivals with the CamperVan Live Lounge.

So we crossed the Channel and built the rest around that - north through England into Scotland, back down through the Lake District and Liverpool, across Wales and eventually to the south coast.

This isn't the perfect loop around Britain. It's the route we actually drove and the places we slept, things worth stopping for and little stories we collected along the way.

    The long way to Britain

    We broke up the drive north with stops in France and Belgium before heading for the Channel.

    Under the Channel and into England

    Car onto train, train under sea, suddenly driving on the other side of the road. Cambridge became our first proper stop in England.

    We continued north to York, wandered the Shambles and then pushed on towards the coast at Scarborough.
